CAN GIVE DAY LEGO Competition

Donate to vote for my MOST AWESOME CREATION for CAN GIVE DAY

What says 'Canberra' to you? The War Memorial? Wrong! Telstra Tower? Nein! Parliament House? Incorrect!

The only REAL answer is of course the Belconnen Owl! So in the spirit of the fundraiser's 'Canberra' theme, I'm bringing this icon of the ACT to miniature, plasticized life with a Lego replica!

CAN GIVE DAY supports our amazing healthcare heroes and patients through Canberra Hospital Foundation.

My Updates

Update: the owl is finished!

With the deadline fast approaching, and my order of further parts not yet arrived, I raided my other builds for the remaining parts. Now, at last, the owl is complete!

After various tests with the face, I've come to a final design which I think adequately resembles the real thing.

Build catch-up #4: Latest progress

OK, a rapid-fire recap of what I've done so far over the last couple days.

And here we are in the present. The owl is mostly built, save for a few missing parts that need to be ordered. The finish line is in sight!

Build catch-up #3: Enter the game

OK, a rapid-fire recap of what I've done so far over the last couple days.

Next step was to jump onto Lego Studio and work out how to build the main body of the owl. Studio lets me get to any parts I need, without having to make an absolute mess in real life! Neat!

I think the finished product looks pretty accurate.  The only thing missing is the beak, and I'm not sure how to tackle that. Now to start building!

Build catch-up #2: The owl's roost

OK, a rapid-fire recap of what I've done so far over the last couple days.

Through means even I don't recall, I have a huge amount of dark orange bricks, so the base came together very quickly. Whatever few parts I was missing were substituted with random colours until I have the right ones.

Build catch-up #1: Taking inspiration

OK, a rapid-fire recap of what I've done so far over the last couple days.

With the theme being Canberra, I wanted to do something recognisable but not too obvious. Also, best to avoid breaking the bank any further, so nothing massive (sorry, minifigure-sized Telstra Tower, maybe next year). I've had a little 3d-printed paperweight of the Belconnen Owl sat on my desk for a while, so I thought, bingo! Decision made.
