As part of CAN GIVE DAY 2024 we sat down with Medical Imaging Team Leader, Jenny, to learn more about the refurbishment of waiting areas in Medical Imaging, which was made possible thanks to CAN GIVE DAY 2023.
Q: Can you briefly tell us about the Refurbishments in Medical Imaging?
A: Medical imaging receptions and linking corridors were looking somewhat outdated and although we had some signage and colour coded floor lines to each modality, patients were still often anxious or confused by directions given by front line staff to each modality. So, in line with the CHS progressive values, we decided that we could solve both issues by adding new modality colour coded seating and wall murals at each reception. The main medical imaging reception area is colour coded Blue, Ultrasound is Grey, CT is red, and Nuclear Medicine, PET and Angio are colour coded Yellow.
Q: How does it make a difference for patients?
A: Well, wayfinding is an integral part of the patient experience and we have had tremendous feedback from both staff and patients. Visually, it has brightened up each of the modality areas presenting a professional front to patients. We have found that it is not unusual for patients to present at receptions feeling very anxious and concerned about their scan or procedure and this is one way we can ease their patient journey.
Q: How does it make your job easier?
A: The refurbishment has given greater clarity with regards to wayfinding instructions eg, follow the green line around the corner all the way to the green chairs and check in at the reception. Staff are confident that patients will reach their destination promptly using the visual cues.
Q: What would you say to people thinking about donating to CHF?
A: Please consider donating to the CHF if you can. Often these small refurbishments don’t get the funding, but they mean a lot to the staff morale and the patients experience.
Q: When people donate to CHF they are supporting staff like yourself, what would say to thank the Canberra community for their support?
A: A big HUGE Thank-you, It’s often the little act of kindness that means the most!
Q: Any particular story that occurs to you that illustrated the benefit of refurb?
A: One thing I haven’t mentioned yet, is the cool idea behind the colour coded murals. They are a visual representation of Doppler sound waves! So Cool!
